Why is nutrition important?

Nutrition is so important in your wellness journey. Each individual has unique, bio-individual needs, but we can tune into those nutritional needs by focusing on three fundamental nutrients: water, macronutrients, and micronutrients. Macronutrients provide the fuel that our bodies need to function. The three macronutrients are carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. By balancing each of these macronutrients using a diverse range of nutrient dense whole foods, we can ensure we our giving our bodies what they need.

Micronutrients are the vitamins and minerals that our bodies need. Most vitamins cannot be produced by our body, so we have to eat the plants and animals that eat them.

The best way to access the macronutrients andmicronutrients we need is by eating a diverse range of nutrient dense whole foods. While supplementation can help us access vitamins and minerals that we lack, there is no substitute for a well-balanced, whole food diet.

Water is the most important nutrient. We can go weeks without food, but only days without water. Water does so much in our body. Water is in all of our body tissue and makes up most of our body fluids. Water is essential to a well life and properly nourished body. (Nutritional Therapy Association, 2021)

In upcoming blog posts, we will look at how proper nutrition (including mineral balance and fatty acids), blood sugar regulation, hydration, and digestion can work together to heal your body and ensure that it is working optimally. A whole food, nutrient-dense diet is the foundational structure for our bodies to be well, but each of the before mentioned items plays a vital role in ensuring maximum health and wellness.
